Modeling of Elastic Collisions between High Energy and Slow Neutral Atoms

چکیده
In the plumes of Hall thrusters and ion thrusters, high energy neutral atoms are created as a result of the charge exchange interaction between exhaust ions and neutral atoms exiting the discharge region. Proper modeling of fast atoms is important for assessing spacecraft-plume interaction in space as well as facility interactions for ground tests. Many numerical models for Hall thrusters approximate the collisions between the high energy and slow atoms via the variable hard sphere (VHS) model, even though the VHS parameters necessary for scattering angle calculations cannot be determined properly due to the lack of viscosity data at high energies. In order to more accurately approximate such collisions, the applicability of the classical approach has been examined in simulations for both a low temperature 1D normal shock and a high energy ion beam experiment. For the low temperature shock, the VHS model outperforms the classical scattering model in speed and accuracy, while it is possible to obtain a nearly accurate shock profile using the classical approach with the semi-empirical HFD-B2 potential for xenon atoms. For the ion beam experiment, the result obtained with the classical approach is clearly more accurate over the VHS model result due to the lack of validity of the VHS model for high energy collisions. However, the classical scattering model is inherently more expensive compared to the VHS model. The computational intensity can be reduced by using the minimum required cross-section to cover the finite scattering region and the means of interpolation from pre-computed scattering angles at ranges of impact parameters and energies. Alternatively, the scattering angle calculation can be performed, without sacrificing much accuracy, with a simpler representation for the interatomic potential and reduced number of integration points when approximating the classical scattering equation with the Gauss-Mehler formula.

Fast Computation of High Energy Elastic Collision Scattering Angle for Electric Propulsion Plume Simulation
In the plumes of Hall thrusters and ion thrusters, high energy ions experience elastic collisions with slow neutral atoms. These collisions involve a process of momentum exchange, altering the initial velocity vectors of the collision pair. In addition to the momentum exchange process, ions and atoms can exchange an electron, resulting in slow charge-exchange ions and fast atoms. In these simul...

On the atomic scale, Molecular Dynamic (MD) Simulation of Nano Al cluster impact on Al (100) substrate surface has been carried out for energies of 1-20 eV/atom to understand quantitatively the interaction mechanisms between the cluster atoms and the substrate atoms. The many body Embedded Atom Method (EAM) was used in this simulation. We investigated the maximum substrate temperature Tmax and...

We investigated the desorption of neutral benzene (C6H6) molecules and silver atoms from C6H6/Ag{1 1 1} upon bombardment by 8 keV Ar ions. Using state-selective resonant ionization spectroscopy, substrate atoms sputtered in the ground and a high-lying metastable state, and ground-state and vibrationally excited molecules could be probed separately. The silver atom yield, kinetic energy and pol...

We examine cold atomic collisions within a resonant optical cavity. The quantized cavity mode can be used to manipulate the collisions between the cold atoms, such that periodic exchange of excitations between the atoms and the electromagnetic field strongly alters the collision dynamics. A colliding pair of atoms can thereby oscillate between its ground and excited states during the collision ...

We present the first simultaneous trapping of two different ultracold atomic species in a conservative trap. Lithium and cesium atoms are stored in an optical dipole trap formed by the focus of a CO2 laser. Techniques for loading both species of atoms are discussed and observations of elastic and inelastic collisions between the two species are presented. A model for sympathetic cooling of two ...
